Create a redacted-looking plain-text passage by replacing all non-space characters or selected literal phrases. Choose solid blocks, dots or X characters, review the result, then copy or download it. Unlike a black CSS background, the exported text contains replacement characters rather than the matched original characters. This is a creative text transformation, not a secure document-redaction or automatic sensitive-data detection service.
For
Writers, designers and people preparing non-sensitive placeholder text or spoiler-style creative drafts.
Problem
A visual overlay can leave original text in a copied result, while manual character replacement is slow and inconsistent.
Output
A preview and UTF-8 text export containing the exact replacement characters and any intentionally retained text.
Use when
Fictional notesReplace invented project names or details in a fictional memo while preserving line breaks and readable surrounding text.
Spoiler-style draftsCreate a deliberately obscured passage for a creative draft. Visible context, spaces and replacement lengths can still reveal clues.
Placeholder layoutsReplace a sample passage with blocks to compare text layout without relying on a screenshot or an overlay.
What to include
Paste plain textThe input accepts up to 5,000 Unicode code points. Joined emoji and combining marks may count as several code points. Over-limit text remains intact, with conversion and export paused.
Choose the match scopeAll text replaces every non-whitespace grapheme. Selected phrases matches literal text anywhere, including inside longer words; add one phrase per line. Leading and trailing spaces in the phrase list are trimmed.
Check matching rulesMatch case is off by default. Matching is not a regular expression and does not normalize accents or spelling variants. The phrase list supports up to 50 distinct entries and 1,000 UTF-16 code units.
Steps
01Set the scopeChoose all text or selected phrases. For selected phrases, enter the exact strings and decide whether letter case matters.
02Inspect the resultReview both retained and replaced text. Spaces and line breaks stay visible. A joined character is replaced as a whole even when only part of it matches.
03Copy or downloadCopy the result or download redacted-text.txt. Only the result is exported, without the source passage, phrase list or hidden document layers. Export is disabled when nothing was replaced.
Try this
Fictional memo
The secret project launches on Friday.
Match secret project and Friday on separate lines to replace both details.
Case comparison
Orion meets ORION.
Match Orion, then switch Match case on and off to inspect which instances change.
Literal punctuation
Sample code: A+B (draft).
Match A+B literally; the plus sign is not treated as a regex operator.
Good output
The result contains actual replacement characters, not styling over the source.
Whitespace and unmatched text remain unchanged.
Overlapping literal matches are covered, and joined characters are not split.
Copy and download contain only the visible result.
No-match and over-limit states cannot silently export the original text through the action buttons.
Avoid
Assuming this finds sensitive informationThe tool does not identify names, secrets or private details automatically. Only your chosen literal strings, or all text, are replaced. Review every retained part yourself.
Expecting whole-word matchingMatching is substring-based: matching cat also changes those letters inside scatter. Include more context in a phrase when you need a narrower match.
Treating character replacement as secure redactionContext, word length, spacing, copies elsewhere and device state can reveal information. This tool is not a substitute for a reviewed secure document workflow.
Limits
Plain text only. No PDF, image, Office file, metadata, OCR, hidden-layer or original-file removal is performed. No security, anonymity or compliance guarantee is made.
Spaces, line breaks, approximate character lengths and unmatched text remain visible. Results are not encrypted and should be reviewed before sharing.
The on-page transformation does not send input to generation APIs or save a history. Original text remains in the open input field and may remain in browser or system memory or the clipboard. Clearing a field is not secure erasure.
Existing page delivery and aggregate site analytics still apply. No claim is made that a page visit creates no network requests.
Case-insensitive matching follows JavaScript Unicode rules, not language-specific spelling equivalence. Canonically equivalent accent sequences are not automatically normalized.
FAQ
Can I copy and paste the black bars?
Yes. They are Unicode block characters in the result, not a visual layer over the original text. You can also choose dots or X characters and export a UTF-8 text file.
Does this redact PDFs or images?
No. It only transforms pasted plain text. It does not inspect files, remove metadata or verify that information cannot be recovered from an original document.
Is this secure redaction?
No security guarantee is offered. Unmatched context, whitespace and lengths can disclose information. Source text remains in the input while the page is open, and copies may exist elsewhere. Use non-sensitive text for creative or placeholder tasks.
Is my text sent to AI?
No. This page calculates the result in your browser, without generation, autocomplete or confirmation API calls and without a stored history. Site delivery and existing aggregate analytics are separate.
Does a phrase match inside a word?
Yes. Matches are literal substrings, not whole-word matches or regular expressions. Multiple matching phrases can overlap. Case matching is optional; accents and spelling variants are not normalized.
Why are Copy and Download disabled?
There is no input, no matching text, an unsupported browser, or a limit error. The original input is retained. These actions remain disabled until at least one character has been replaced.
